An engineering and research school of international standing

Mines Paris – PSL has been training, since its creation in 1783, top-level engineers capable of solving complex problems across a wide range of fields. It trains 150 engineers, 200 master’s students, and 100 PhD candidates per year, and hosts 235 research faculty members.

As France’s leading engineering school in terms of contract research volume, MINES ParisTech carries out extensive industry-oriented research. Its research fields range from energy systems to materials, including applied mathematics, geosciences, economics and social sciences, and management.

Mines Paris – PSL is part of the Université Paris Sciences et Lettres (PSL), which brings together 16 prestigious higher education and research institutions located in the heart of Paris. PSL is a selective, human-sized federal university of a new kind, ranked among the world’s top 50 universities.

Collaborative research and academic excellence

Mines Paris – PSL brings together 18 research centers organized into five departments (mechanics and materials; economics and society; energy and processes; geosciences; mathematics and systems), in collaboration with CNRS, Polytechnique, and INSERM. Their interdisciplinary work has led to the emergence of new disciplines such as geostatistics, mathematical morphology, flat systems control, sociology of innovation, and design engineering.

Research is conducted in partnership with industry and generates €30 million in contracts per year, ranking the school first among French grandes écoles. Over five years, 17 companies have been created and 18 research chairs have been established. Academic excellence is reflected in 2 ERC grants, 2 Nobel Prizes, over 400 annual publications, and strong international openness (prestigious partnerships, with one-third of faculty recruited internationally).

A diverse and cutting-edge range of academic programs

The academic offering reflects the diversity of the fields covered. In the civil engineering program, students can choose from 16 specialisation tracks across all the school’s areas of expertise (applied mathematics, robotics, geosciences, design, logistics, sociology, industrial economics, etc.) and benefit from individual tutoring.

The program places strong emphasis on internships abroad and exchanges with top international universities. In addition, the school has developed a wide range of complementary programs: 8 international master’s degrees, 10 national master’s degrees, and 13 specialized master’s programs.

Why this collaboration with the Chair?

Mines Paris – PSL’s contribution to the Urban Mines Chair focuses on new business models and circular economy ecosystems. The aim is to understand the levers that enable companies to shift toward circularity strategies.

One of the current research axes explores strong circularity models aimed at decoupling companies’ revenues from their environmental impacts, particularly the consumption of non-renewable resources. In this context, the school studies strategies of “programmed sustainability” and “committed sobriety” adopted by pioneering companies, based on service-oriented models (repairability/repair, refurbishment, usage and sharing economy) and eco-design approaches.
